I’ve struggled so much with my process; how to start, how to let go and not overthink, and how to allow my exploration be at the forefront. I’ve been following MJ’s work for a few years, seen the inserts in my Sunday NYT etc. Mostly I’ve been trying to figure out how to not think of creating art as a finished work. It’s so challenging because I’m also an interior designer who has to provide a finished work for my clients. I felt inspired reading about MJ’s process; how he doesn’t plan or adhere to any style or outcome. I strive to do that so I can truly feel free as an artist.

I moved to Silicon Valley in 1990 to live with my brother. I had $500 and some art supplies and clothes and student loans. No trust fund.

This interview was enlightening. The proliferation of ads in the New Yorker , NY Times etc was always a mystery. Interesting to to follow the development of the work and to learn that it wasnt an Apple trust fund supporting the ad campaign but a much more interesting story. Of all the places for an artist to live in a piano crate, the Silicon Valley doesn’t seem the most likely but I’m sure there’s more to the story.

There’s a virtual walkthrough of my current exhibit on Pamela Walsh Gallery’s IGTV this Friday, June 9, at 12:30 PST. I’ll be speaking with the San Jose Museum of Art curator, Kathryn Wade. Thanks again Larry for the chance to tell my side of the story. I appreciate all of the emails I’ve received from younger artists who seemed to enjoy my long winded, pedantic thoughts.

A great colorist. I prefer the ones without figures and the less naturalistic ones are his best. They are not abstracts. The figures are bit forced in. In all his work there is a lot of dialogues with modern painters (American more than Europeans, a bit of Morandi but not that much, as Morandi is much more metaphysical). His best works have a great style, the brush strokes have energy and they are intuitive. He lacks a bit of originality (but who really has that our days, you have one or two Picasso Matisse for century no much more than that).
I find the interview (his answers) bit pedantic. I much prefer his works!
Still very very interesting!
Thank you Larry! As usual!

My early morning beach walks merged into my perennial gardens – same scenes, same towels blowing in the wind, but vibrancy altered by the sunlight. I am trying to share this changing wonderland with my two year old granddaughter, showing how a sandy mundane beach towel is as inspirational as a half-Cape with water in the background. It’s what you choose to see and how it affects you.

I have to admit I’ve been curious about the NYT ads as well and appreciated MJ’s straightforward response.
