He taught a Color and Design class that I was taking when I was an art student in the ’60s. He opened up a wonderfully clear, deeply thought out way of understanding painting. His insights and understanding of the structure of painting had a lasting impact on my work

I was feeling pretty disheartened searching on my computer looking for places where my artwork would feel “at home”. I see so much conceptual art, very tight academic painting, that I do often feel that the art world no longer wants or appreciates my “perceptual” point of view. I typed in painterly painters not expecting much – but I am overwhelmed and inspired! Thank you so much – I will definitely keep in touch with this website.

Wonderful to see these images in larger format than elsewhere on the web! I am a huge fan of Finkelstein, and would suggest seeking out the collection of his essays and talks: The Unpicturelikeness of Pollock, Soutine & Others:Selected Writings & Talks by Louis Finkelstein (9781877675676)

Louis Finkelstein’s “Two Figures” above was purchased by the Kresge Art Museum in East Lansing, MI, as part of their “Figurative Expressionism” collection. There is a great essay by curator April Kingsley, and images of the collection here: http://www.a-r-t.com/figexp/
