John Thornton interviews and discusses Robert Birmelin in his latest video, Robert Birmelin’s Life in Art before his upcoming exhibition at the Stanek Gallery in Philadelphia (reception on Saturday, March 4)

Robert Birmelin, who will turn 90 in November, is a major American artist known particularly for his paintings of New York City crowds. In Philadelphia, he is represented by the Stanek Gallery. I wrote an extensive interview with Robert Birmelin a few years ago that you can read here, interview-with-robert-birmelin.

Robert Birmelin has been a hugely important figurative painter showing at many leading galleries, from the Stable Gallery in New York City in the 1960s to the Peter Findlay Gallery in the early 2000s. Throughout his long career, Birmelin has had numerous solo exhibitions and critical reviews in leading publications, see (see robertbirmelin.com here for his website)

Robert Birmelin, Suburb (Reversible),2002. Acrylic on canvas, 36 x 48 inches

The Stanek Gallery press release states:

His prolific and expansive practice utilizes various mediums and covers many themes, including real estate, crowds, time, divergent relationships, disruptions, and multiple perspectives. The works gathered in “Conversations with the Other” express the sentiment of an outsider looking in on scenes with several areas of focus rather than a single focal point. They dare the viewer to look and then look again to find the disruptions within the original narrative.

An online exhibit of the work can be viewed from this link.

RSVPs are required to access the gallery, you can register for the event by contacting Stanek Gallery.

From the YouTube write up by the Jewish Museum:

On Thursday Mary 24, 2012, contemporary artist Lisa Yuskavage and Chief Curator Norman Kleeblatt discussed the paintings of Edouard Vuillard, on view in the exhibition, Edouard Vuillard: A Painter and His Muses, 1890–1940, and his influence on artists working today.

http://ow.ly/AmICF

“There are a surprising number of contemporary artists, working in diverse media, who are channeling Vuillard,” observed Norman Kleeblatt, Susan and Elihu Rose Chief Curator of the Jewish Museum. Yuskavage and Kleeblatt’s conversation will highlight what makes Vuillard so relevant for this decade, look back at Vuillard’s influence on artists of the post-World War II era, and discuss Yuskavage’s own complex art.

The Intimist painter Edouard Vuillard was a major influence on Lisa Yuskavage’s paintings early in her career, and he continues to inspire her work in unexpected ways. Vuillard remains a constant reference for the contemporary painter in her choices regarding composition, color and subject matter.

David Bomberg video in 4 parts on YouTube
First BBC broadcast: Sept 2014, British Art At War, Episode 3/3
from the YouTube video blurb:

In the years preceding 1914, David Bomberg, Walter Sickert and Paul Nash set out to paint a new world, but, as the century unfolded, found themselves working in the rubble.

David Bomberg is now recognized as the most startlingly original British painter of his generation but died in obscurity more than half a century ago.

A Jewish immigrant from London’s east end, his early modernist works pushed art to its limits. Fighting at the Somme, David Bomberg watched the world splinter and fall apart just like the works of art he had created. Bomberg spent the rest of his life searching for order in an increasingly disordered world, and his wanderings took him as far as Palestine before he settled at the end of his life in Ronda, Spain.

When he died in 1957, embattled and in poverty, he seemed to be no more than a footnote in the history of British art. However, the works that survive David Bomberg tell their own story. Combative and iconoclastic, he remains the most elusively original British painter of the 20th century.”

Interview with Joanna Fink and Bernard Chaet from the Alpha Gallery, Boston

re-edited on the occasion of the exhibition Bernard Chaet (1924 – 2012): A Life in Art – Alpha
Gallery, Boston – December 1, 2012 through January 2, 2013

Bernard Chaet taught painting and drawing at the Yale University Art Department from 1951-1990 and was the Chairman of the Art Department for a number of years.

Chaet’s friend and School of Art colleague William Bailey called the painter “one of the great figures in American art.”

A very good article from a 2013 WBUR episode by Greg Cook is transcribed here Bernard Chaet’s Far Horizon and this Wikipedia page.

Bernard Chaet’s, The Art of Drawing, comes out of his teaching experience at Yale and is put to great use here in this timeless book about creative drawing. This book has been hugely popular and influential to art students for many years. It’s more about making art than technique and materials. Even as he introduces basic concepts such as line and value, his illustrations show the inventive ways great artists used these concepts in the making of their art. Chaet avoids the regurgitation of academic rules that discourages creativity and provides a fresh approach that is as relevant today as when this book first was published in the ’70s.
